Unscientific poll

Is it unethical to bring back species that humans drove to extinction?

Yes. Evolution has already filled the voids left by extinction.

Maybe. It's so cruel to the individual animals involved in the process.
17% (49 votes)
No. We need to try to reinstate the natural habitat that we've wiped out.

Immorality

In my view, it is immoral simply to pursue the knowledge of how to do such things. This sort of scientific knowledge is a more dangerous tool than any moral person should be willing to bring into existence.

It -is- immoral. It is no different than if some physicist were to describe how to recreate the Big Bang for under $300 -in a paper posted on the Internet.

We all know there would be a race to see which fool would do it first.

Extinction reversal

In your opinion then, pursuing any knowledge which could possibly, even remotely, have any kind of effect, is immoral? Get some sense! Knowledge is not immoral, only some of the uses to which it is put!

Extinct species

Evolution does not fill the gap created by man made extinctions. As can be seen by studying the habitat of species wiped out, either other creatures suffer, plant life changes or usually both occur. But this is not normal evolution it is forced change by unnatural means. It would be satisfying to be able to rectify our excesses but in the long run by trying to change things back we usually cause other problems. But that does not mean we should not try because in trying we find out so much more about the what we are and how we came about. In doing this perhaps we can find other ways to stop the destruction of our planet. A good example is the reintroduction of the wolf back into Yellowstone Park which has started to restore the correct balance of the wildlife and plant life whithin that region. From these sort of programs we can watch and hopefully learn.

speaking of rectifying our excesses

How about banning the butchering of innocent babies thru planned parenthood? That would be a moral thing to do. How about trying that?

DNA reintroduction of animal species that man has made extinct

I feel that we should try and bring those species that man has made extinct back using thier DNA. BUT, we need to be careful on what species that we bing back and be careful to not destroy the current evolved species, by unleashing animals that will kill those modern animals off.
The other thing I worry about in the re-making of extinct species, is that their immunity systems will not have evolved to ward off the latest microbial diseases.

bringing back extinct species

If we can do it, it is within the laws of nature.
If it is impossible, then it is not.
How can you argue with nature.

laws of nature

this is certainly an interesting way of looking at it.
you give me pause for thought!

I think...

I think we need to look after the species (inc humans) before we bring anything back or make anything new... bring them back to what?? This mess of a world that is full of hate and anger, war and starvation, cruelty beyond measure!!!
Leave things as they are...

ancient dna

i think that bringing back extinct species and releasing them back to the wild could firstly upset the food chain, secondly bring back a few would be safe and could cause incredible discoveries like finding out wether dinosaurs became birds.
