Oil or orangutans?

Thursday, 22 October 2009

Illegal logging and palm oil plantations are destroying the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. We all have a part to play in resolving this, says Louise Boronyak.

oil or orangutans ?

Then there would be a lot of different products that we shouldn't eat. Almost everythins is overproduced at some animal's, human's or vegetal's expense...

OIl or orangtans

the short term seems to be we all avoid processed foods ... hello that would help our Co2 emmissions and all sorts of other issues as well ..

Long term, inflation has to be Zero.. all the worlds economies are geared to inflation because it is easier to manage and sell to us (the people). Global competition promotes inflation, if population growth was stopped we could be sustainable. Otherwise we are NOT!

About time!

It has taken far too long for this seemingly obvious step to be taken. This issue began cropping up in the media a few years ago (eg reports on ABC’s Foreign Correspondent). Back then it seemed obvious that we needed the same approach as for labelling dolphin-friendly tuna. Orangutans are cute, like dolphins, and it would only take 1 emotive advertising campaign with cute pictures of orangutans to get the public behind it. I don't think we should just save 'cute' species, but an icon like an orangutan can help save not just itself, but also its habitat and the other species in it. I wondered if organisations like Greenpeace were too busy running campaigns against GM food or nanotech, to do publicise something straightforward like this which could really make a difference and has a good chance of success.

Palm oil production must be regulated in a sustainable way

There has to be a sustainable way of maintaining current palm oil plantations alongside the Orangutans. I am an animal lover however also have family who own plantations (although mostly fruit) in and around Malaysia - upon which hundreds of other local jobs are created. It is easy for people in the West (I live in London, UK) to demonize these businesses in favour of animals however a wider view should be taken. The key is to stop illegal trade and plan sustainable production which takes into account all potentially affected parties.

Bye Bye to Palm Oil

We are already avoiding these products, where possible. If one product uses palm oil and a similar one does not, we buy the one without even if it is slightly more expensive. As awareness rises, palm pil will go the way of transfats and the way high fructose corn syrup should be going away.

How selfish does a person have to be to vote "No"? Very, very.

Oil or Orangatans

The destruction of the native forests and the planting of Palm Oil plantations is short sighted, and if continued probably devestating not only to the Orangutan population but also to the people who live there.
Palm Oil is just a quick fix. I was happy to see that Cadbury has reversed its decision to put palm oil in its chocolate. Reducing quality in an effort to make bigger profits can seriously backfire.
