Buzz Aldrin: Mars pioneers should stay there

Monday, 27 October 2008

The first Mars astronauts should be prepared to spend the rest of their lives there, in the same way that European pioneers to America knew they wouldn't return home, says Buzz Aldrin.

Mars pioneers?

The reality is with existing technology there is the potential that any Mars expedition will likely be permanent, due to radiation exposure. Many NASA scientists have stated during conference reports, that a successful round trip is not likely. Getting the astronauts there really isn’t the problem. Bringing them home is. Until we can improve radiation shielding or shorten the time significantly, it is a one-way mission in any context.

martians

Truely a great idea, maybe we should send up the trash, colloquially know as politicians, tell the scum that it's a far safer place than Earth, and see them queue to leave

Saints?

Isn't this basically a suicide mission? Does that make them martyrs?

Martyrs?

I wouldn't quite call them Saints...
But i suppose it's the closest word we've got.
But I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who are willing to spend the remainder of their life on another planet. I'm not saying that I do, but some people would see this as the adventure of a lifetime!
I mean, look at the original explorers, they had no idea what to expect and they still went out and had a look around. We know what to expect and we still haven't done anything to explore the unknown for ourselves!

Doesn't Matter

Doesn't Matter It Won't Happen.
Always the space program has been America's whipping post. Always "there are so many problems here ... etc." America lost it's vision and nerve. Friends we are entering the Dark Ages for America.

Mars Mission

The Mars Mission does not have to be done by America alone. In fact I would prefer it not be. This should be a joint mission and include many nations. This way we can ensure everyone receives the data on an equal basis no matter what it may be.

This way we can ensure everyone receives the data

"This way we can ensure everyone receives the data on an equal basis no matter what it may be."

Haha come on, there is so much wrong with that sentence. Are you implying not everyone has received data on an equal basis in the past? Or are you just conspiratorial mined let's blame America kinda guy?

Why should everyone get data "on an equal basis" in the first place, if not everyone contributed equally?

".. no matter what it may be." ???? Huh ? haha what's that supposed to mean?

Re: sharing

Visitor--please engage brain before using the keyboard--Humanity deserves to be informed of any revelations and science from space exploration. Where's your sense of sharing?

If We Could Just Take the First Step

If we could get over ourselves, our colonies from the very first could be what we need to re-orient ourselves, to re-gain a sense of mission. I myself have my own opinions about what that means--to me, it means repudiating the notion that we aren't taking God with us to outer space. That somehow God is a superstition best left behind of earth. A NASA engineer once told me, We won't need God in space. The engineers will be God. But we need God to get our space-legs on, just as they needed Him in the opening of the American continent (oh and by the way we need to lose the idea, too, that somehow that was a bad thing). You see, men need an excuse to do something so crazy as to martyr themselves. Notice how I put that: an excuse. They will do so, as long as they don't have to look like the fools they would be under any other philosophical system than -- than Christian, is my own personal take, looking at the cross and what it has meant to mankind over the centuries.

Come to my blog and read, Please Send Catholics to Outer Space, where I explore some other ramifications of space exploration to our economy and the war on terror. Take the Silly Lily poll on the race to Alpha Centauri, too.

Data....

Please try not to be so xenaphobic, do you want this attitude to start the nfirst Martian war??
