A few hours into watching it and you could well find yourself pondering what it is that’s different about the Philips 42PF9831. Then if you move your eyes a little beyond the edge of the screen, you might just spot it.

The 42PF9831 features Philips’ Ambilight Surround technology, which casts a subtle coloured glow about the wall around the edges of the screen. This glow dynamically blends in to the image on screen, complementing it and giving the impression the screen is bigger than it actually is.

At the centre of the glow is an impressive LCD screen in its own right, with high-definition resolution and all the latest digital inputs. It might not be the biggest screen on the market, but it’s definitely one of the slickest.
