Awards recognise Australia's talent in science

SYDNEY, 23 August 2006: Scientists and researchers from around Australia doffed their lab coats and tweed jackets last night in favour of sharp tuxedos and sparkly frocks for science's night of nights, the Eureka Prizes.

Begun in 1990, the Eureka Prizes - managed by the Australian Museum in Sydney - recognise outstanding achievement in the fields of research activity, leadership and innovation, secondary school science, science journalism and science communication.

This year's winners include scientists, researchers, postdoctoral fellows and students from around Australia for topics as diverse as ethics, the environment and quantum computing.

And the winners are:
