Obama reportedly told Democratic lawmakers shortly after his inauguration in January that he would guarantee lifting Bush-era restrictions on federal funding of stem-cell research.

He also co-sponsored legislation while a senator that would have permitted using federal funding for stem-cell research.

Debt to American people

"Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe that we owe it to the American public to explore the potential of stem cells to treat the millions of people suffering from debilitating and life-threatening diseases," his campaign said in a statement last year.

Bush argued that using human embryos for scientific research – which often involves their destruction – crossed a moral barrier and urged scientists to consider other alternatives.

Embryonic stem cells are primitive cells from early-stage embryos capable of developing into almost every tissue of the body.

stem cell research

Yes, right on for Obama in lifting the restriction and promote stem cell research. We need to compete with other nation by moving science forward and provide adequate funding for all the science projects such as Astronomy, High energy physics, and definitely stem cell research. All of those religious fanatics have no clue about how important sciences are and they are truly idiots. Just take a look at all the advanced medical technology we have which depend on scientific methods and researches, and without that, how can we improve the quality of lives by prolonging it? Life expectancy is longer these days and people tend to be healthier thanks to medical advances. Politicians ( republicans) and religious people are clueless about what is going on and they are just being pointless by condemning stem cell research. Science is about making progress while politics is just congress.
