Damien Broderick and his latest novel Credit: COSMOS/Nick Cubbin COSMOS fiction editor and respected novelist Damien Broderick has been awarded the 2006 Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Novel for his latest book, K-Machines. The Aurealis Awards were established in 1995 by the publishers of Aurealis literary magazine to recognise the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. The judging panels are made up of volunteers - readers, writers, editors and publishers with a background or interest in speculative fiction. The 2006 awards were presented at a ceremony in Brisbane, the capital of the northeastern state of Queensland, on 27 January 2007. Besides works of science fiction, the Aurealis Awards honour fantasy, horror, children's books, and works of fiction for young adults in a total of 13 catagories.
