Two for the price of one

Recent reports indicate a pig has just taken flight over the snow-covered vistas of Hell. Yep, Apple is using Intel processors in its new line of iMacs.

Contrary to Apple's cheeky advertising campaign, it's not the iMac that has set the Intel processor free, it's Intel's new powerhouse Core Duo processor that has breathed new life into the iMac. This new wonder of semiconductor engineering is like having two processors in the one chip - both of which run at the haughty pace of 2 GHz. Sadly, old Mac software needs to be converted to run on the new chip, but this is where yet another clever piece of technology comes in. It's called Rosetta (hats off to the girls and boys at Apple's Naming Department for that one) and, like the stone, it translates, so it can run on the Intel chip. The iMac might not be the cheapest home computer in the entire world, but it's slick, fast and, well, white.
